PURVIS' namesake, the DD-709 USS HUGH PURVIS, was launched on December 17th, 1944, with Newport, Rhode Island, as her home port. The destroyer was named after a U.S. Marine Corps corporal, Hugh Purvis, who received the Medal of Honor in the late 1880s for heroically tearing down the enemy's flag during an assault in Korea. Following 27 years of proud service, the ship was decommissioned and removed from the Navy list in the early 1970s. After being transferred to the Turkish government in 1972, the destroyer was eventually returned to the U.S. Navy in 1993 to be dismantled. Although the ship is no longer with us, her name (and the corporal's) proudly lives on in its own small way here at PURVIS Systems Incorporated.
PURVIS continues to remain affiliated with the ship's past crew members through support to the Hugh Purvis Association. In 2002, the association presented PURVIS with a scale model handcrafted by former crew member, Nick Marinaro. The model is proudly displayed in the reception area of our Rhode Island office.
